Cinema One "American Hot Wax" All about teenagers, rock and roll, and 50's nostalgia. Cinema Two "Julia" An exquisitely made film Brooks is back at best It's the perfect set-up for terror: the victim is innocently taking a shower, unaware of the huge shape coming nearer on the other side of the curtain. With a sudden screech, the curtain is jerked back and the at tacker flails at the victim with a damp newspaper? Who can possibly build excitement from a wet gazette? Mel Brooks, that's who. Coming the heels of his riotous "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein," Brooks takes on the master himself, Alfred Hit chcock, in "High Anxiety." It should be obvious to everyone that nothing is sacred to Brooks. Taste is not one of his redeeming qualities; anyone who remembers the bean-eating scene from "Blazing Saddles" will agree Brook's ' style of humor is much subtler than Woody Allen's, his closest competitor. ' Where Allen is prone to delivering fast one-liners and wry wit, Brooks goes in for broad sight gags. Fri, Sat midnight at The Movies "The Goodbye Girl" The per formances of Richard Dreyfuss, Marsha Mason and Quinn Cummings 'spark this Neil Simon comedy about unlikely apartment dwellers. The Garden hilarious, Brook's gags are broader than ever. His most ingenious moments come when he directly parodies Hitchcock. As in his recent "Silent Movie," Brooks is the star. His back-up crew has been the route with him before. Madeline Kahn is cast as his love in terest; Cloris Leachman is perfectly evil as the villainous Nurse Deisel, and Harvey Korman is Diesel's slick parter, Dr. Montague. Brooks, as Dr. Richard Thorndyke, is appointed the new chief of the Psycho-Neurotic Institute for the Very, Very Nervous. Leachman and Korman, acting from basic greed and envy, soon start a series of attempts to do him in. Here lies the springboard for most of Brook's laugh-getting talent. It wouldn't be fair to reveal any of the scenes; Brooks does manage to work in satires of Hitchcock's "Psycho," "Vertigo" and "The Birds." If you're looking for a good time, look no farther; "High Anxiety" is Mel Brooks at his best.—by John Ward Admission Free r 1, 34,4,41, ) ° 4 7, X / : `) ‘S .2....t.14 ." Irwin Allen packs "Dybbuk" explores rite, rituals of exorcism By JOYCE GANNON Daily Collegian Staff Writer Since the immense popular appeal of "The Exorcist," the film industry has not been at a loss for scripts about demonic possessions and mystical ex periences. But the idea has become a little worn out after "Carrie," "The Omen," and the current offering, "The Fury." Audiences might not realize that exorcism did not begin with Linda Blair throwing up green stuff in a Georgetown bedroom. The rite of exorcism is a traditional, religious ritual which P e nn State's Experimental Theater Company explores in its world premiere production of "The Dybbuk." The play, which will run at • the Pavilion Theater March 22-25, with a special preview the 21st, deals with the exorcism of a "dybbuk," or dead man's spirit, from a living person. It is the modern adaptation of a 1914 Yiddish script by S. Ansky. The adaptation is performed here for the first time. It is under the direction of Dan Ronen and was written by Leon Katz of the University of Pittsburgh, a former in structor of Ronen's. He views ex perimental teater as "a unique rediscovery of an experience which film and television cannot provide. In The Dybbuk,' the audience rediscovers the ritualistic element through the physical and mental states of the actors." The play is the story of a young man and woman whose love cannot be fulfilled in their lifetime because of strong traditional barriers. After the man dies,,his spirit enters the girl's body. A conflict then arises between two rabbis and their approaches to mysticism: conservative and revolutionary. Ronen said the revolutionary attitude symbolizes the aspect of experimental theater he prefers ) "the on-going youth cycle to keep humanity alive." Ronen emphasized that the main level of "The Dybbik" which the audience should discover is the inner experience of the actors .explored by different a retired detective who tries to help screwball Lily Tomlin find her cat and winds up in a murder mystery instead.
